Lauren & Jeremy : Wedding

This was a one of kind wedding! You remember Lauren and Jeremy from their engagement session, right? And remember when I told you their wedding was going to be unique? Well, it all went down last Saturday and it was quite an experience!

I love how Lauren planned the whole wedding to be so uniquely their own. She did not want to have a traditional wedding so she just started from scratch. Lauren is an artist and that’s what artists do right?

Wedding was held at the historic Weinberg Center for the Arts. There were no bridal party, no flowers, no traditional wedding gown or tux! What they did have was pop corn, candy, make your own trail mix bar, an espresso bar, dessert and a movie. And guests were asked to wear semi-formal attire inspired by decade of choice!

The ceremony included musical performances by friends and family, a brief message by the pastor, personalized vows that they wrote, ring exchange then a real first kiss. Like it was really their first time kissing each other. It was beautiful.

Lauren and Jeremy! Thank you so much for having me. It was truly an honor to be a part of their wedding.

It was also so great to see some old friends that I haven’t seen in a while and meet many of the family members. Thank you to all of you who stopped to chat with me.

My Family : Chicago

I’m on a roll here. More personal photos:)

We drove out to Chicago recently for a little family reunion at my sister’s place. 7 adults, 9 kids under one roof. It was so great to be together and all the children playing so well together brought us much joy. We celebrated birthdays, a trip the the Science and Industry Museum, girls tea party at the American Girl doll store, playing Wii, great conversations, and lots of laughter. We made some good memories.

Here are some photos and there are more on flickr.

My Kiddos

It’s been way too long since I posted anything of our kiddos. I’m so backed up on going through and posting our personal photos that my own family and relatives are threatening me;)

My excuse? I’m serving taking care of my wedding and portrait clients:D For real!!

I still haven’t finished going through photos from fall and winter but I recently dumped a bunch of photos on my flickr site but here are some of my favorites. And I still have more to post at some point.

Let me just say wifey and I love being parents to these three wonderful kiddos. They are a gift and we’re so grateful for them. We really don’t want them to grow up anymore but we have no control over that. So thank God for photography to capture our life:D

Heather & Joel : Wedding

Happy New Year everyone! I hope Twenty Ten is a wonderful year for all of you!

I kicked off the 2010 wedding season with Heather & Joel. They are one of the most gentle and sweetest couple I’ve ever met, and their wedding was just as sweet. It was very intimate with close friends and family.

My fellow photographer friend Paul Barrios joined me for this wedding and it was a lot of fun.

Despite the cold temperature and 20-30 mph wind Heather and Joel wanted to go outside for some photos, and we lasted for about 7 minutes. I give mad props to Heather for braving the weather in her strapless dress and open toe shoes.

Thank you for letting me be part of your special day, and have some major fun in the sun!

Me and my boy

Sadly I haven’t had a chance to process or organize any personal photos lately that I’m backed up all the way to August. That includes photos of some of our newborn boy, Halloween pics when our kiddos were dressed up as Cinderella, a Pumpkin and Gus :D , trip to the zoo, fall pics, and Christmas. Hopefully, I can get to them soon and share some with you.

Here’s a pic of me and my older boy I came across last night. It was taken on his birthday last month by my wifey and I love it! I love tickling him and hearing his laugh.

In case you were wondering, this was taken with the Canon 85mm f/1.2 L II lens at f/2.0 on my 1D Mark II N. I borrowed this lens for a week to test it out and it makes beautiful pictures as you can see. This photo is basically straight out of the camera. I just warmed up the white balance a little and sharpened it for web. The sharpness, color saturation and bokeh is wonderful. But the auto focus was painfully slow for me to consider purchasing this. For me the Canon 85mm 1.8 is the winner over the 1.2.

Here’s a blog post for hobbyist on some lenses under $500 that I’d recommend.

theresa choi - What a happy child and father! I hope you get to edit those backed up photos in 2010! :)January 1, 2010 - 4:59 pm

90 yrs. old : Portrait

Funny how some things happen in life. I was preparing a blog post about a portrait session with Mrs. Sheffer who battled with brain cancer. Then I got an email from Gloria who inquired about a portrait session for her grandmother. Gloria shared with me that they just found out her grandmother has lung cancer and the doctor told the family she has about 5 months to live. Grandma doesn’t know yet though. Wow…I was speechless.

At that time I had recently done a session for Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep as well as the portrait session for the Sheffers. Then I got Gloria’s email. As I was thinking about these three families, I was convinced God was leading me to use my gift as a photographer to bless others by doing special portrait sessions like this.

Despite the busy holiday season and having to postpone our session due to the crazy snow storm I got to meet Gloria’s grandmother. What a lady. I love her. She was full of joy and energy. I couldn’t believe her when she told me she was 90 yrs. old. She said it was by  God’s grace that she’s been healthy so far and had a blessed life. I came back encouraged by her strong faith in God and joyful smile and laugh!

Thank you Gloria for the opportunity to meet your family.

Meet Gloria’s grandma and her daughters. Some were visiting from out of town from Korea and Germany.

DSLR Lens recommendations under $500

One of the most common questions I receive are regarding lens recommendations. So here are my Digital SLR lens recommendations under $500 for starters or hobbyists.

First of all, I’m a Canon user but I’m not a Nikon hater so I’ll try to help you out too.

1. The kit lens. Foggedabout it! Ain’t worth it. Just buy the DSLR body and start out with one of the following lenses.

2. 50mm 1.8

Everyone knows about this lens. In both Canon or Nikon you can get it for around $100. You can get some amazing images with this lens and it’s so worth it at that price.

Canon 50mm 1.8 price check: Adorama or B&H

Nikon 50mm 1.8 price check: Adorama or B&H

3. 50mm 1.4

I love this lens! This is an upgrade to the 50mm 1.8. Both Canon and Nikon. I believe Nikon has a newer version. The old one is Nikon 50mm 1.4D and the new one is Nikon 50mm 1.4G Help me out here Nikon friends!

Canon 50mm 1.4 price check: Adorama or B&H

Nikon 50mm 1.4 price check: Adorama or B&H

4. 85mm 1.8

Canon or Nikon. I love this lens! I tried the Canon 85mm 1.2 the focus was way too slow for my taste so I prefer this.

Canon 85mm 1.8 price check: Adorama or B&H

Nikon 85mm 1.8 price check: Adorama or B&H

5. Canon 28-135mm 3.5-5.6 IS

I can’t say that I love this lens but it’s a good lens that gives you a versatile range. For me, I just didn’t like the image quality straight out of the camera.

Canon 28-135mm 3.5-5.6 IS price check: Adorama or B&H

6. Tamron 28-75mm 2.8

Third party lens. Make sure you’re buying one specified to Canon or Nikon. This is a nice all-purpose lens. I’ve tried it and seen photos taken with this lens.

Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 price check for Canon: Adorama or B&H

Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 price check for Nikon: Adorama or B&H

I’m sure there are more lenses under $500 but I have hands on experience with these lenses. If you would like to suggest other lenses or have any thoughts to add please leave a comment.

The reason why I recommend Adorama or B&H is because they both have great services and quality that I can count on and trust. FYI, I have no ties with them other than that’s where I get all my gear from and I like them.

And as always, having the latest camera or lens isn’t going to make you a better photographer. Read the manual, learn your camera and keep shooting!

Sarah Patch - Ok. Thanks!December 31, 2009 - 4:58 pm

Peter Bang - Hi Sarah. In my opinion the 50mm 1.4 is worth it in the long run since you're shooting weddings and such. The build quality is better, focuses faster and sharpness and colors are better.December 28, 2009 - 10:04 am

Sarah Patch - Thanks Peter, very helpful! Was already thinking of buying one of the 50mm. Is the 50mm 1.4 really that much better than the 50mm 1.8 that it's worth more than double the price? Is the only difference a little bit more depth of field?December 27, 2009 - 9:24 pm

Peter Bang - awesome shots sehyung! thanks for sharing.December 18, 2009 - 5:18 pm

Peter Bang - Hi Jeff, thanks for writing. I've not had any hands-on experience with telephoto lenses other than the 70-200mm 2.8 IS. I don't know what your budget is but some options that I know of are 75-300mm 4-5.6, 28-200mm 3.5-5.6, or the 70-200mm 4.0. Can't say that I can recommend any of them but here's a good resource for lens reviews for Canon I go to often. http://www.the-digital-picture.com/December 18, 2009 - 5:16 pm

Jeff - I am just a hobbyist and recently got a Canon Rebel (1000d) and since it was a gift I got the packaged deal. I am looking for a quality telephoto lens that won't break the paycheck. Any ideas? Also I have a question about Infared photography, is there a way of doing it with out voiding the warranty on the camera by having it modified? Thanks,December 18, 2009 - 2:17 pm

Sehyung Kim - Sigma has a newer version of 17-35/2.8-4.0 lens that's just about $500. It's hard to find, but it's a GREAT lens, especially for the price. It has HSM, Sigma's version of USM and has manual focus override and at 2.8-4.0 aperture, it's plenty fast for the zoom range. Peter Bang - Thank you guys! I'm glad you think it's helpful. Elise, let me know which specific lens example you'd like. Maybe I can try to do that. In the latest engagement post of Lauren and Jeremy most of the indoor shots are done with the 50mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.8, and the b&w close up of the two of them outside is 85mm 1.8. The ones by the water are all 70-200mm 2.8 IS.December 18, 2009 - 9:43 am

Elise - That was so helpful! (especially that they're all under $500) Do you think you could post a few example pictures, so we could see the quality of the lenses?December 18, 2009 - 8:57 am

Kara - THIS may just be your best post yet (and that's saying something since I'm obsessed with your pictures). Thanks for the tips!!December 17, 2009 - 5:38 pm

Paul Barrios - Dude my NIKKOR 85mm 1.8 is my favorite lens. I want the latest 50mm 1.4 because Nikon has the new nano coated glass which has some amazing results. Both my 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses have it and it rocks.December 17, 2009 - 2:25 pm

Lauren & Jeremy : Engagement

I’ve known Lauren and Jeremy for several years and this goes back to even before they were together as a couple. I was quite excited when they started dating and most recently when they got engaged!

I really can’t wait for their wedding next month because it’s going to be really unique. You’re gonna have to tune in for that blog post in the near future.

The engagement session was a total blast! I loved that I got to capture Lauren and Jeremy as themselves in a setting that is comfortable and meaningful for them. Lauren chose this awesome coffee shop called the Beans in the Belfry as a location for our shoot because that’s where they went to hang out after Jeremy proposed.

Lauren loves coffee, Jeremy loves to play the guitar, they love to read and hang out and that’s what I captured. An added bonus was the date of the engagement session was right in between their birthdays so they got to celebrate that too!

We ended our session at the spot where Jeremy asked Lauren to marry her. Unfortunately the water was too high so the actual rock where they actually got engaged was under water. It was still great to capture them at their special location.

I’m so happy for you guys and I’m so excited to share these photos with you! Can’t wait for your wedding!

Special thanks to Beans in the Belfry for giving us permission to use the whole shop for our photoshoot. Make sure you visit this coffee shop for good coffee, food and good times. It’s an old church building converted into a coffee shop and it’s so unique and charming.
